Ocean Water Protection Mantle of Responsibility, 2019

Amaniidza da lax süülda

freshwater pearls, engraved silver, silver salmon vertebrae, green amethyst, prehnite, diamonds

Collection of the Artist

Water protection is one of the main issues for Indigenous people on the coast. We are concerned about the return of the salmon, and how fish farms, oil spills, and other pollution will affect this essential resource.

For this necklace, I cast vertebrae from salmon that I fished on the Skeena River. I kept some of the vertebrae and dried them out, and eventually I was able to reproduce them in silver, using modern casting techniques. From the time I caught that fish until now, it took seven years. It's not a quick process to develop new things, it takes time.
